The 2nd Avenue Bar Tour

Great Summer Spots In The Heart of the UES

With something for everyone, the strip of bars and restaurants from 75th Street to 78th Street is right in the geographic heart of the Upper East Side and a great place to enjoy the summer weather any night of the week. Here, with a walk of 100 feet you can go from one of New York's great karaoke haunts to a world class wine bar and everything in between.

This strip which includes Iggy's Karaoke Bar, The Stumble Inn (formerly Mo's Caribbean), Southern Hospitality, Uva, Doc Watson's, Vero, Brother Jimmy's and Hi-Life is bustling on any night of the week.

Starting at the south end of this strip at 75th Street is Iggy's Karaoke Bar, New York's premier location for everything Karaoke. Open 7 nights a week, you are guaranteed to always see aspiring rock stars give it their best while having the time of their life at this spot.

Next on our tour is The Stumble Inn, the new incarnation of Mo's Caribbean. With a new spacious inside and back room and loaded with booths you can enjoy the same great food and music as when it was Mo's Caribbean in this newer and just as young and lively bar scene.

Staying on the same east side of the street, but moving north past 76th Street we come to Southern Hospitality. The brainchild of Justin Timberlake, this southern influenced bar and restaurant blends great food, noted for it's ribs with a sports bar mentality and the style and chicness that Timberlake is known for.

Going up one more block, we come to one of the premier and most popular wine bars in the entire city. Uva, a favorite a favorite hangout of this writer's girlfriend has a premier wine list and outstanding menu featuring pasta dishes and a wide variety of cheeses. Often very crowded, this dimly lit and spectacular restaurant require reservations for it's main dining room, back room or sidewalk cafe seating on most nights.

Moving on, about half way up the block is a classic Irish Pub / Sports bar, Doc Watson's that you can never go wrong at to watch a game, have a burger and a pint of Guinness and just relax with some friends. With friendly staff, plenty of big screens and spacious indoor and sidewalk seating, Doc Watson's is a great destination to unwind.

Crossing the street to the west side of 2nd Avenue, we have one of the Upper East Side's other great wine bars, Vero. A much smaller space, but very intimate and cozy, Vero offers an excellent menu of cheeses, small plates and of course, a premier wine list. Also, be sure to ask about there seasonal wine classes on Saturday afternoons.

Going two doors down from Vero, we come to an entirely different experience, Brother Jimmy's BBQ. If the the Stumble Inn, was a little too relaxed for you, stop in at Brother Jimmy's for your selection of ribs and pitcher beers. While an UES classic, please remember that Brother Jimmy's is definitely for the young at heart or those looking to relive their college glory years.

The last stop on our summer drinking tour of 2nd Avenue is Hi-Life between 78th & 79th Street. A bit of an update on the sports bar, Hi-Life blends big screen TVs, with great food and downtown attitude to create an environment that offers something for everyone. While it does not have outdoor seating, Hi-Life does have bay windows which open up in the summer to allow for you to enjoy the sounds of 2nd Avenue while you drink the night away.

While there are many other good restaurants tucked into this strip, they are too numerous to talk about in one post. But don't worry, we will get to them in time. As this concludes our tour of the 2nd Avenue bar scene, please don't just take my word for it, go out and experience these places yourself and hopefully I will see you there.
