Life of a Quizmaster

If it's Tuesday, it's trivia time on the Upper East Side. At Gael Pub, teammates scratch their heads and stir up rowdy debates: What's the most common first name of a U.S. president: John ... or James? Who's the actress in photo number 13 on the handout: Farah Faucet ... or could it be Jane Fonda?

But, while brainiac pals chomp away at hot wings and rack their brains for tid-bit facts stowed away in the fifth grade, Quizmaster David Jacobson, 29, is hard at work. Last week, with 22 teams in attendance, he swiftly completed quite a bit of score-sheet tallying behind the bar. I recently spent a few minutes with Jacobson exploring the life of a Quizmaster.

Girl About Town (GAT): How long have you been Quizmaster?
Quizmaster(Q):Going on 6 months! Lovin’ every minute.

GAT: How exactly did you achieve Quizmaster status?
Q: Quiz night at Gael Pub started about a year ago. I'd attend with friends, and always have a lot of fun. Then, my big break came. The original Quizmaster left -- and the replacement was a real bore. My friends said, “Dave, you should be Quizmaster.” I was like, “You know? you’re right!” A little persuasive chat with the bartender, Paul, sealed the deal.

GAT: How do you come up with the questions?
Q: I’ve been extorting the questions out of an honors student over at P.S. 6. Once the trivia is up to my standards, she can have her doll back.

GAT: What's the best thing about being Quizmaster, apart from stealing little girls' dolls?
Q: I love the opportunity to practice public speaking for a few hours every week. It’s a great skill to have, and you can’t ever have enough experience with it.

GAT: And, the worst?
Q: Drunken hecklers who don’t respect The Quizmaster’s authority.

GAT: Where are you from originally?
Q: Born at New York Hospital , 72nd & York.

GAT: Wow. You're a real Upper East Side native, then.
Q: Well, my parents moved to Connecticut when I was a toddler, but I came back 5 years ago for grad school. I've been an Upper East Sider for three years now.

GAT: Why did you choose to live on the Upper East Side?
Q: Lucked out with a great apartment on 83rd & Lex…discovered the Gael Pub a block away when it opened. Now, I live at 90th and Second, an easy walk to the 92nd St. Y, where I work.

GAT: You mean you have a daytime gig, too?
Q: Yep. I'm a program associate for the Charles Simon Center at the 92nd St. Y.

GAT:
What's the best team name you've ever heard?
Q: “Rehab is for Quitters” gets me every time. I also got a kick out of, “Fat People are Harder to Kidnap.

Recent photos from Trivia Night at Gael Pub, 1465 Third Avenue, between East 82nd & 83rd Streets. On this particular night, our team didn't walk with the $50 bar tab prize. Rather, we came in second-to-last. Drats! Maybe the loss was the result of our preoccupation with taking silly photographs. Geez, what on Earth did people do to amuse themselves before digital cameras?
